in the manufacturing landscape

SEYI Taiwan integrates machines with different automation, thus enabling solution-based products for customers. How are you transforming from a manufacturer to a total solution provider?
We provide smart production solutions, instead of a single press machine by working with customers, to begin with the design of customized manufacturing solutions that raises the capabilities of customer production lines. The areas include pressing machinery to robotic arms to feeding and conveying equipment. We change our business practices into the service-oriented thinking to strengthen competitive advantage of the customers, instead of only selling equipment to the customer. That makes us a total solution provider.

What are the company’s initiatives towards Industry 4.0? What developments are happening on this end?
For Industry 4.0, we are implementing smart plant concepts. We adopt some programs from SAP and other vendors in manufacturing execution solutions, integration and intelligence as well as information management to gradually form solutions such as shop connector systems, assembly lines, equipment, products, monitor connected together all production related processes into a complete network of intelligent production. As a machine tool plant, we have changes of technology and product development in the manufacturing sector, particularly Industry 4.0 waves. We will integrate with Taiwan’s ICT (information communication technology) strengths to promote products in new areas.

Given that the industry-academia activities have become important for the growth of the manufacturing industry, what steps are being taken by your company to promote this?
We implemented the education cooperation with colleges and conducted employment-oriented programs to offer several positions to students in electric machine department to practice for a month. We also sent our engineers to build up industrial-college classes to teach students related courses and arrange them for internship or help to convert the hours in factory into the students’ credits. This develops technical personnel training program to send our senior engineers in their junior semesters and then select suitable students for the program.

What are the challenges witnessed in manufacturing mechanical presses? How does R&D work in your domain?
The major challenge is the constant knowledge about the trends of metal stamping equipment development, integrating upstream and downstream industry resource to import comprehensive solution and provide optimal production programs, assist our customers the best of profitable production to create the win-win industrial synergies. As such, the R&D team needs to understand customers’ requirements in the beginning to design the whole solution to precisely satisfy their business needs eventually. This trend will be a crucial turning point to win over customers who need tailor-made solutions.

Keeping in mind the Indian demand scenario, what kind of product line is being offered by your company?
Currently, the most popular products for the India market are small tonnage models. Along with the rapid grow of India market, especially in automotive sectors; our large tonnage machines shall provide more value and meet users’ needs better.

Can you elaborate on the industrial trade activities between India and Taiwan? What are your future expansion plans for the Indian market?
The major trade activities are fine parts and equipment from Taiwan and assembling or manufacturing the end products in India to sell in the international and domestic markets. In future, some Taiwanese companies will also set up plants in India to closely serve the customers. We will concentrate on selling more high quality and larger tonnage products first, and then build up an intensive dealer network to expand the Indian market.

FABTECH Mexico 2015: SEYI Demonstrates Cutting Edge Technology and Expansive Support Team

2015 FABTECH Mexico: Attention to Service and Support Most Important to Attendees. Technology: SEYI displayed the latest in servo press technology, demonstrating to attendee after attendee the flexibility and ease of use of the SEYI SD1-88 ton direct drive servo press, featuring a proprietary high-torque, low RPM motor, electronic overload protection, unparalleled frame construction, and limitless programming functionality. SEYI’s unique vibration mode was unanimously a crowd favorite, which exemplifies SEYI’s superior drive system and attention to dynamic response.

Support and Service:

Attendees unfamiliar with SEYI before the show left the booth with the confidence that SEYI will follow through with outstanding direct support and service. Launched in 2014, the SEYI-Mexico office was represented in full force at the 2015 FABTECH Mexico. Led by General Manger Horacio Pena Villareal, service, sales, and administrative members from the Monterrey-based service center were available to answer attendee questions and detail SEYI’s well-established customer base, having more than 120 press and turnkey system installations in Mexico, including mechanical gap frame presses, straight side presses, and servo presses. SEYI-Mexico is continually adding new members to their service and sales divisions, some new members were even present at the show. What was once an office of three just one year ago has grown two fold, doubling the number of service technicians and expanding geographical reach to support several Mexico regions. SEYI-Mexico will also begin stocking spare parts for faster service response and turnaround next month.

Seyi’s 2-point eccentric gear stamping press was one of only ten products to receive the Gold Award at the 2015 Taiwan Excellence Awards.  Held each year since 1990, The Taiwan Excellence Awards brings together a panel of international judges to rank Taiwan-made products in their ability to demonstrate “Innovalues,” innovation + value added within four major categories –

R&D, Design, Quality, Marketing, and…Made in Taiwan.

SEYI’s SE Series Eccentric Gear press was selected for the Gold Award among 1,155 product entries from 448 companies. The press was recognized for innovations in the design, including 8-surface eccentric gibs, achieving 20% energy savings in production, and achieving high-frame rigidity through efficient and economic design.

The award also set a milestone for the precision machining industry as SEYI became the only machinery equipment company to win the Gold in the last twenty years.

SEYI celebrates the tenth anniversary of the opening of its plant in Kunshan, Jiangsu Province in the People's Republic of China.

TAIPEI, Nov. 18, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- SEYI (SHIEH YIH MACHINERY) (4533 TT), one of the world's leading producers of mechanical presses, celebrated its tenth year in China with an open house on November 14, 2014 at its plant in Kunshan, Jiangsu Province. Ever since the opening of the Kunshan plant more than ten years ago, SEYI's sales in China have grown and have become a significant part of the Company's total sales. Sales in China have increased by 50% so far in 2014.

SEYI, which was founded in 1962, has historically served consumer, computer and communication equipment manufacturers in Taiwan. As SEYI's customers began expanding their manufacturing facilities into Mainland China, SEYI followed with the establishment of the facility in Kunshan.

While continuing to serve its traditional customer base, SEYI has used its Kunshan manufacturing base on to expand into China's rapidly growing automotive industry. In 2014, Chinese automakers are expected to produce nearly 24 million vehicles, accounting for approximately 28% of the total number of vehicles produced in the world. Since 2009, when vehicle sales in Mainland China surpassed those in the United States, China has been the undisputed world leader in autos.

With manufacturing in Kunshan, SEYI has now added Ford from the United States, Toyota, Honda and Nissan from Japan, Kia from Korea, as well as European Tier 1 and Tier 2 auto suppliers from France andGermany, as customers. Kunshan, which is located in the southeastern part of Jiangsu Province adjacent to the municipality of Shanghai, is ideally situated to serve customers in China's northern, central and southern provinces, as well as those in the eastern part of the country.

In order to serve its growing list of automotive customers, the Kunshan facility has been expanded to two workshops; the Company has begun manufacturing higher tonnage presses; and the technical skills and capabilities at the factory have been upgraded. The management team has also been strengthened .

According to Albert Chen, Executive V.P. of SEYI America,

Large Press Systems Division

Managed by Scott Braito, The Large Press and Systems Division focuses on the detailed design, engineering, and project management requirements commonly associated with large, multi-press projects.  As SEYI America’s chief mechanical engineer, Mr. Braito brings more than 15 years of experience in SEYI’s product line and engineering complex systems.  His strong working knowledge of controls, automation, and integration will play a key part in coordinating with a team of factory engineers, equipment partners, and tooling designers.

With 15 years of technical sales and business development experience in electric motor and stamping industries, Randy Kish heads up the Servo Press Division.  His focus on product development and applications will drive the further integration of SEYI global resources towards customer support and service.  Randy will work closely with the Taiwan Forming Team and Servo R&D department, as well as with SEYI’s network of tooling designers and tryout centers.

SEYI Direct Drive Servo Press Demostration at FABTECH 2015

SEYI America stamping presses is pleased to announce its exhibit at the

upcoming FABTECH show, November 9-12 in Chicago, IL.  Held in booth S4235 in the METALFORM area, live demonstrations will feature SEYI’s single point 88T Direct Drive Servo Press making 10mm/.4” deep extruded holes using SEYI’s unique vibration motion profile.

By taking advantage of the direct drive capability to apply constant energy within programmed repeatable stroke steps, key takeaways from the demonstration are how to remove the risk of cut- edge fracturing while maintaining complete control over material expansion limits, and reducing heat and lubrication in the forming process.

By programming 35 up (.3mm/.01”) and down (.8mm/.03”) stroke steps within a 45mm/1.77” distance to BDC, a 10mm/.4” deep extruded hole with an 8mm/.31” i.d. is formed in one press cycle.  The extruded hole has 2mm/.08” thick side walls with a 45 degree top bevel and a very tight base radius.  The process starts with a pre-blanked hole in a 4mm/.16” thick piece of Domex 240 hot rolled, extra high strength, cold forming steel, commonly used in vehicle chassis and other load-bearing and structural applications. 
Along with the live demonstration, attendees can examine numerous parts formed on SEYI servo presses, receive a virtual demonstration of how the parts were made, and how servo programming capabilities can be implemented into everyday production.

Getting the most out of a Servo Press investment could be challenging at first. With servo, it's about speed, vertical distance, and die design.  Reducing die stages; slowing the ram to avoid snap-through, reverse tonnage, cracks, breaks, and tears, or simply speeding things up.   All of these are possible in a servo press.  But do you need it all?

Some processes may work just fine with a mechanical Link Motion press. And even though a link motion profile is one of many ways to program a servo, it may be all you need.  At booth B1401, the guys at SEYI would like to help you evaluate your choices.  So, stop by:)

SEYI America Adds New Members to its Service Department

Over the last year, The SEYI-America Service Department has gone through a major face lift.  It's nearly tripled its in-house service capabilities.  Joining the team at the SEYI America Service Center and Showroom, located in Tullahoma, Tennessee are Stephen Deaton,  Kevin Appel, John Oosting, Renee Abelardo de Hoyos, and Robert Hatfield.

"Qualified, seasoned service technicians are hard to come by," says David Hattabaugh, SEYI-America Service Manager.  "We've been fortunate.  Two of our new guys are transplants from up North; Illinois and Michigan. Both of them had previous experience with press repair companies.  Renee, who is actually now part of the SEYI Mexico office, has had years of machine repair and electrical experience.  And we rounded it out by grabbing young talent from a local technical school."

While the new staff has years of mechanical experience, much of the hiring criteria focused on electrical knowledge.  "With today's servo technology and advanced automation, troubleshooting and diagnosing electrical issues are a priority.  Our new guys came in with the knowledge and experience, and are familiar with PLC programming, logic, and electrical."

New SEYI-Mexico Branch Office Unveiled at 2014 FABTECH Mexico

Amidst a dark hall, forklift fumes, and the most complicated equipment move-in for SEYI at a Mexico show…ever, Horacio Peña Villarreal and Marclea Hinojosa Amarante received their “Baptism by Fire” into the wonderful world of show management, and kicked off their journey as the new leaders for SEYI in Mexico. They are young, bright, and ambitious, a resounding theme with SEYI around the world. 

Shortly after opening ceremonies on Tuesday, May 6, SEYI made a formal announcement about the new branch office at an in-booth press conference. Here is the transcript…

With recent foreign investments in the area of ​​automotive, appliances and electronics in Mexico, SEYI sees the need to provide more direct support and care to their current and future clients to ensure a quality service and a fast and efficient solution for their needs. The world is focusing on Mexico to be their production link for export to other countries and are also attracted to the local growing market.

SEYI decided to establish the office in the city of Monterrey due to the fact that the stamping industry has been there for many years, and in surrounding cities to it. Admittedly, around the country, automotive clusters are growing in other locations, so in the near future; SEYI expects to have direct support in these areas also to support these customers.

During the first two years, SEYI Mexico will have a workforce of five people in its offices in Monterrey. There will be a person focused on office administration and marketing, two people focused on direct customer sales, and two service technicians. This workforce is believed to meet the current needs of our customers and in the near future the hiring another sales person and a service technician will address in a more efficient way the personal attention to our customers and the market. Upon completion of these first two years, SEYI Mexico will have an office and warehouse space where we will have parts and presses for demonstration and research for the Mexican industry.

 

Both Horacio Peña Villarreal (Manager), and Marcela Hinojosa Amarante (Administration & Marketing) were trained for a year in SEYI’s corporate offices in Taiwan for insight into the product, and planning the strategy of this office in Mexico with all SEYI’s senior executives worldwide.

The objectives of this new office of SEYI in Mexico are to be able to reach and surpass the levels of customer satisfaction, increase the presence of SEYI in Mexico, and provide support for research and development for the industry in collaboration with educational institutions.

Show Partners Key to SEYI's Record Setting Success at 10th METALFORM Mexico Show

It wasn't the 6.8 earthquake that had Show Organizers at attention.  

No, instead, it was SEYI's 44,000lb servo press; 20 tons of vertical mass, needing to be off-loaded, placed, and operable. A feat never attempted in the 10 years that the Precision MetalForming Association (PMA) and Tradeshow Consulting have produced METALFORM Mexico, now known as a key technology area at FABTECH Mexico.

“We needed a lot of help to make this happen,” says Randy Kish, SEYI Regional Sales Manager.  “PMA, TSC, and Global Events rose up to the challenge.”

Under the thoughtful leadership of Global Events and cautious attention by Centro Banamex engineers, SEYI's SD1-176 servo press was unloaded and set in to place without a hitch.  

The press was powered up, and the last test performed; operating in Vibration Mode, SEYI's signature servo profile...

There was barely a rumble.

“This whole experience has been a great example of a strong partnership with the trust to see things through,” says Kish. “Congratulations to PMA and Tradeshow Consulting for 10 years of METALFORM Mexico.”

SEYI-Taiwan and America Take Center Stage at the 2014 Shanghai High Performance Machining Conference

This past February 25-26, Mr. Peter Hsu of SEYI-Taiwan and Mr. Randy Kish of SEYI-America presented Servo Press technology to the nearly 250 production and engineering professionals from Chinese automotive and aerospace industries at the 2014 High Performance Machining Conference in Shanghai.

To kick off the two-day event, leaders from local universities and industry associations presented attendees with industry insight, trends, and challenges facing Chinese parts manufacturers. For the remainder of the conference, demonstrations by leading machine tool manufacturers, material suppliers, and process innovators presented new technologies that can help these manufacturers make the most of production

opportunities.

Mr. Peter Hsu from Seyi’s Taiwan corporate offices and Mr. Randy Kish of SEYI-America, introduced the latest developments in servo press technology.

Their demonstration of direct drive servo press applications lead attendees through an overview of sheet metal forming principles, how traditional mechanical forming fails with new materials and customer demands, and how Direct Drive servo press technology meets the challenges for current and future customer response. 

Using animations, video and actual parts, application case studies revealed quality and productivity improvements in drawing and forming cylindrical shapes, automotive oil pans, and torque converters.

SEYI-China Kicks off 10 Year Anniversary with New Office Complex

The final finishes are being completed on a new five-floor SEYI KunShan Office Building and accompanying Dining Center.  Rising above the 230,000sq.ft. + of production at the SEYI-China factory, the new office complex is scheduled for move-in later this Spring. 

According to Albert Hsu, Director of Administration, “…The new office could not have come at a better time…”

“We needed this,” says the 18 year SEYI veteran.  “The office building and dining center offer something for everyone.  We are centralizing the sales, purchasing, finance, IT, and R and D Departments.  They will be together in one building.  By moving these departments, we will have more room to expand our production and training.  The new office also has plenty of meeting and conference space.  We think that this will make for a more pleasant and productive experience for our customers and other guests.

We are also very excited about the dining center.  It is state of the art, and it will provide the latest amenities for our more than 300 employees, as well as for special events like the 10^th anniversary.”

The new office complex sits across from Plants 1 and 2 of the

current factory complex, encompassing more than 230,000sq.ft.  Plans are to add a third building and expand even further.     Plant 1 is the C-Frame assembly building, and current residence of all administration offices.  These are the offices that will be relocated to the new office building.  Plant 2 is dedicated to straight side assembly, up to 2,000t presses.

SERVO Die Training in Sweden

Sweden in January?...Really?  Thanks to our SEYI-Europe team, Scott Braito and Randy Kish of SEYI-America travelled to Sweden...in January...for a team-building exercise in SEYI Servo Press capabilities.  

The two-day exercise was highlighted by a servo capabilities demonstration. 
Led by Micheal Juhle, SEYI-Europe President, the two day training brought together SEYI distributors from throughout Europe to Ulrichehamm,  Sweden - home to Nader Laalinia and SEYI’s newest servo die design and tryout center.

Nader Laalinia is President of Finstansteknik, a leading tool design and custom machine tool manufacturer and integrator. Nader also acts as SEYI’s Sweden representative, offering servo tool and die design, building, tryout, and motion programming.  He has a SEYI SD1-200 in his facility and he’s excited about servo die design and programming with SEYI.

While much of the training focused on ways to integrate Europe/America customer experiences, Nadar’s servo demonstration brought together hours of discussion into three different SEYI servo press benefits: 

1.       Nearly-No-Noise Heavy Blanking with Free Motion

a.       Achieving a high NR rating requires forming at very slow speeds, with very controlled breakthrough.  You’ll need a very high torque, low RPM motor with near-zero mechanical clearance. 

2.       High-tolerance Forming with SEYI’s Unique Vibration Mode

a.   SEYI’s Vibration mode puts the motor, drive, control, and construction together for the ultimate in high precision/highly complex forming.  Though you may barely see it in action, the results are mind bending. 

3.       Form Off-Center Like Never Before – Rethinking the Unitized Design

a.       If you’re serious about servo, then at some point you’ll want…or need…to introduce new stresses to your press.  Long dwells under tonnage, vertically complex die sets, high precision off center forming.  SEYI’s unitized frame and Electronic overload are specifically designed to address the demands.
